The Defiance County Democratic Party believes deeply in human dignity, democratic values, and the right to peaceful expression. These principles guide everything we do.
At a protest held in Defiance on 01/11/2026, a counter-protester was present across the street. Members and volunteers affiliated with our organization did not engage with the individual, consistent with our commitment to peaceful assembly. However, we were deeply troubled by actions taken by individuals not affiliated with our organization, including harassment, physical confrontation, and throwing an object at the counter-protester.
Let us be clear: This is not who we are.
We categorically reject violence, intimidation, and escalation, regardless of who is involved or what beliefs they hold. Democracy is not strengthened through harm or humiliation. People can get hurt, and when we abandon our values, we risk becoming the very thing we oppose.
Our party believes the most powerful response to hate and division is humanity, restraint, and kindness. De-escalation saves lives. Compassion confuses extremism. Peaceful action protects everyone.
We also affirm that law enforcement is entrusted with upholding public safety while following clear rules and constitutional standards, including the prohibition of excessive use of force. Accountability and restraint are essential to maintaining public trust and protecting democratic freedoms.
We will continue to stand for:
- Peaceful protest
- The safety and dignity of all people
- Accountability for those in power
- A democracy rooted in humanity, not fear
We call on everyone, regardless of political affiliation, to choose nonviolence, empathy, and respect. That is how democracy survives. That is how we move forward together.
